Course 2, Lesson 2
________________
Establishing Contractual Agreements at the First Meeting
Detailed explanations will follow in the next lesson and in Course 3.
Note: Whenever "group" or "team" is used, it can mean "group", "team", or family".

The Contract is a set of agreements between the members of a group – and also with the leader. The Contract establishes understanding and commitment that helps the group accomplish its purpose.
For most of the first meeting there will not be a group, only a collection of individuals working at deciding whether or not they want to form a group. During the course of this discussion, people will come to agreements with one another and with the leader.
I present a Contracting Process with 14 steps. It is not until Step 10 that an actual group exists.
Potential group members will be responsible to do the things listed in Steps #1 through #9.
Starting with item #10, the group has begun and has its own responsibilities.
The following is what individuals considering group/team involvement and, later on, the brand new group will do during this process of coming to important initial agreements.
1. The offer of the possibility of a group experience will be considered by individuals.
2. The individuals will take a close look at what it will mean to form the group.
3. Those individuals who want the offered group experience will form the group.
4. The new group will define their expectations through agreements that will help them be successful
at achieving the group purpose.
