Empowerment Leadership Model for Small Groups, Teams, & Families
Lesson 1/1
________________

The Secret to Empowering Groups & Teams & Families
The 4 Biggest Mistakes in Small Group and Team Leadership
and What to Do Differently

Note:  Whenever "group" or "team" is used, it can mean "group", "team", or "family".
________________________________________________

Teams, groups, committees and families can be far more powerful than they usually are. This is because the leaders of these less effective groups (a) focus on the group members and do not lead the group as a whole, hindering it from becoming a strong, capable social system, (b) do not help their groups adopt a purpose that is deeply desired by the group members, (c) do too much for the group and its members and create dependency upon leadership that cripples group members and the group as a functioning organism, and (d) do not foster synergy and interdependence that brings out latent strengths.

In this Introduction to the Empowerment Method of leading groups and teams, we will address these four absolutely necessary ingredients.

1  The leader must lead the small group or team as a whole and help it become a strong social
              system that addresses essential tasks.

2  The leader must help the small group or team adopt a purpose that is critical to (highly desired
by) the members of the team or small group.

3  The leader must not do essential things the small group and its members can do.

4  The leader must help the small group or team develop interdependent synergy.

To help understanding, we will apply the method to groups, teams and families.

Become One the Best of Small Group and Team Leaders

No, not a leader of individuals in a group as usually taught. But actually lead the group as a whole, speak to the group as a whole, and build a capable group, team or family that can handle most anything.

You can learn how to help a group or team become strong and capable. But you will have to change some of the ways you have been taught to do things. The most effective small group leader builds the group, focuses on the group rather than on the members of the group, and teaches and coaches the group to adopt and succeed at a chosen purpose.

The group, not the leader, should do almost all of what leaders traditionally do. The result is that the group itself becomes strong, producing stronger individuals. On the contrary, when individuals are the focus of a group leader's efforts, crippling dependency upon the leader develops and most all group processes are eliminated. Such elimination robs the group of those tasks that will make the group successful and strong. It also robs the individual members of those social situations and tasks that lead to their significant growth.

The group should and can do all that is necessary in the way of taking care of, discipling and directing individual group members. If you will learn the empowerment model of group work, you will be amazed at what a group can accomplish. Group members will increase their effectiveness with one another fourfold right in the group meetings. Everyone will get more help, more affirmation, more encouragement.

Through this model of small group leadership, where the leader leads the group, speaks to the group, and gives work to the group rather than doing it himself or herself, you will see your groups and their members prosper and grow more than you imagined.
